Despacito, a song by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi with Daddy Yankee was released in the year 2017. It was the top streaming music of that period within the space of six months. This mix of reggaeton and pop music has not only brought an interest to the genre, but also to Latin music generally. Billboard's Top 100 in 2015 had two songs that were mostly Spanish and 2016 saw four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it to the Top 100 In 2020, there were 41 such songs. Justin Bieber remixed Despacito 2017 as a bilingual rendition. Then, various artists collaborated with reggaeton superstars such as Drake as well as Bad Bunny with MIA (2018), Madonna and Maluma together with Medellin 2019. As early as 2020, a few reggaeton artists protested that it was moving toward more mainstream. Rauw Alajandro is a part of a new generation that aims to change the course. He used elements from other genres and electronic music.
